Security Guard Services in San Diego: The Staffing Math Behind Reliable Coverage

A 24/7 post is 168 hours a week. How to evaluate San Diego guard providers by the staffing math: relief benches, overtime, handoffs, and overnight supervision.

Security Guard Services in San Diego: The Staffing Math Behind Reliable Coverage

Most guard contracts do not fail because the guards are bad. They fail because the staffing math never worked. A post that cannot be filled reliably gets filled tired, filled late, or not filled at all.

If you are pricing security guard services in San Diego, ask the staffing questions before the price questions. The price tells you what an hour costs. The staffing tells you whether the hour happens.

A 24/7 post is 168 hours, not one guard

One full-time guard covers about 40 hours a week. A post that runs around the clock needs 168. Divide one into the other and the floor is 4.2 guards before anyone takes a vacation, calls in sick, or quits.

In practice, a reliable continuous post takes about five people attached to it. If a proposal prices a 24/7 post with three named guards, the plan is overtime. Ask where the other hours come from.

Overtime is a quality problem before it is a cost problem

A guard in hour eleven of a shift misses things a rested guard catches. Chronic overtime also drives turnover, and turnover restarts the learning curve at your site.

Ask the provider how many overtime hours their San Diego posts ran last month, and what they do when a shift cannot be covered without it. A real answer has numbers. A vague answer is the answer.

Ask about the bench

Every post needs relief coverage. The question is whether the relief guard exists and how far away they are.

San Diego County is big. A bench guard in Escondido does not help a Chula Vista site on thirty minutes notice. Ask where the guards who would cover your site actually live and work, and how often the bench is tested.

Coverage breaks at the shift change

The riskiest minutes of a post are the handoff. The outgoing guard has the day's context. The incoming guard has fresh eyes and none of the history.

Ask how handoffs would run at your post. Look for a short paid overlap, a written pass-down, and a rule that the outgoing guard does not leave until the relief is on site and briefed. A vendor that treats the shift change as a gap in coverage will eventually show you why it matters.

Who supervises the overnight

Day shifts get attention because managers are awake. Overnight posts are where supervision quietly disappears.

Ask how often a field supervisor visits each shift, including the overnight, and how those visits are documented. Ask who a guard calls at 3 a.m. when something goes wrong, and what that person can actually decide.

What to ask before you sign

How many guards are attached to my post, and how does that number cover 168 hours a week?

How much overtime did comparable San Diego posts run last quarter?

Where does my relief coverage come from, and how fast can it realistically arrive?

How do shift handoffs work, and what is written down?

How many supervisor visits happen per week, on which shifts, documented how?

If the answers are specific, the program is probably real. If they are only reassuring, keep looking.

Braav staffs security guard services in San Diego around this math: enough named guards per post, a real local bench, documented handoffs, and supervision that works the overnight. If you are comparing providers for a San Diego site, start with the staffing plan, then the price.
